A composite design with a steel girder and structural concrete was Ost Engineering's solution to two important client objectives:

  • Saving money by reducing the primary girder size
  • Allowing for full use by reducing depth clearance to 100-year water levels

The client's primary concerns for Ost Engineering to address were accommodating increased widths of farm equipment while staying on budget:

  • Construction costs were minimized using steel girders from a demolished highway bridge
  • Removable guardrails were designed to accommodate wide loads

The client wanted Ost Engineering to keep the existing architectural design with a new bridge that would outlast the original wood structure which lasted only 18 years:

  • Future replacement costs were reduced with a longer projected life span
  • The original architectural theme was retained
